Wall collapse kills Smart cofounder

MANILA, Philippines—The cofounder of the country’s largest mobile phone firm died at the height of Tropical Storm “Ondoy” (international codename: Ketsana), when the perimeter wall of his home collapsed on him, according to a company official.

In a text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Smart Communications Inc. spokesperson Ramon Isberto confirmed that company pioneer David T. Fernando was killed on Saturday.

Details remained sketchy as of press time, but people familiar with the situation said that Fernando was killed when the wall of his house at Loyola Grand Villas subdivision in Quezon City fell on him.

“[The structure] may have been weakened by rains,” said a company official who declined to be identified.

On Monday, the company circulated an internal memo saying that Fernando’s remains lay at the Christ the King Church in Green Meadows subdivision, Quezon City.

“Dave, as he was fondly called, served as chief technology officer and head of fixed network of Smart,” the memo read.

“He was instrumental in developing the technology roadmap and initial roll-out of cellular, fixed and backbone networks of the company.”

The memo described Fernando as “a maverick in the telecoms pre-liberalization era, who envisioned the state of the art and creative solutions for the telecoms industry.”

“He was an active member of the Philippine Electronics and Telecommunications Federation for 20 years, and accorded the Outstanding ECE Award,” the company said.

after 7 months...

**Apology can NEVER bring back the tears that had fallen. It can't even let you FORGET the pain that you've felt. But it surely REFRESHES a wounded pride and relationship.



I'm not really sure why, all of a sudden, I wanted to start blogging AGAIN. Sheesh. I'm crazy! :))

Anyway, uhh, so far this day is one of the stupidest during my stay at UPD. And it's all because of the first long exam in Bio1. The day started so good because of our Comm3 presentation. [Our grade is 1.0! :)] Just because of one exam, well, you get the point. :))

Oh, yeah! I didn't attend my PE class because I, uhh, STUDIED for the exam. :)) 'Twas my first time to cut classes! XD

Hmm. Tomorrow, I'll be doing Plates 14-16 [ES1] at school because I don't know how to and what to do. Someone will be teaching me. :)) (Hey, thanks!) [Hmm. I hope na it's true that classes would be cut at 1pm so that there would be plenty of time for ES1. :)) I need to do this kasi someone said na if I get 70% or higher sa ES1 second long, he'll treat me! Yey! Food, food, food! I love food! XD
