Labels Exposed!

LABELS EXPOSED

When it comes to food labels, it's never as simple as "what you read is what you get." More often than not, what you think you're reading means something else or is telling you nothing at all. Take a look at the sneaky words used on the stuff we eat.

1. "Pure" or "natural." These words sound great – but they’re all for show. If you look closely, products with these words on their labels also have a list of ingredients that include artificial flavors and colors.

2. “Made from real fruit” or “made with real fruit.” Keep in mind that the law does not require the label to say how much real fruit (or any other type of food) is in the product. It also doesn’t require the label to explain how exactly the packaged food was processed. In most cases, a snack claims to be “made with real strawberries” only contains one strawberry – and the rest of it is sugar and other substances.

3. “Organically grown,” “organic,” “pesticide-free,” and “no artificial ingredients.” Manufacturers hoping to cash in on the organic food bandwagon use these lip service words. Unless the label says “certified organically grown,” you don’t know for sure if what you’re getting is really organic.

4. “No cholesterol.” This tag commits a sin of omission, as it doesn’t include the cholesterol-raising or hydrogenated fats in the food. Hydrogenated fats can be more hazardous to your health than saturated fat or cholesterol. Look at the fine print in the ingredients list and ditch the product when you see terms like “partially hydrogenated soybean oil” or any of its variations.

5. “Low-fat.” This one’s a misnomer, as the manufacturer often compensates for the fat by adding more sugar.

6. “Calorie-free.” This actually means that the food contains less than five calories per serving.

7. “Fat-free.” This really means that the food contains less than 0.5 grams fat per serving.

8. “Reduced fat.” This indicates that the food contains at least 25 percent less fat than regular versions of the food. However, “reduced fat” mayonnaise or potato chips will still contain plenty of fat.

More than a week has gone by since my uncle passed away. I'm still mourning. Here's the article from The Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Wall collapse kills Smart cofounder

MANILA, Philippines—The cofounder of the country’s largest mobile phone firm died at the height of Tropical Storm “Ondoy” (international codename: Ketsana), when the perimeter wall of his home collapsed on him, according to a company official.

In a text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Smart Communications Inc. spokesperson Ramon Isberto confirmed that company pioneer David T. Fernando was killed on Saturday.

Details remained sketchy as of press time, but people familiar with the situation said that Fernando was killed when the wall of his house at Loyola Grand Villas subdivision in Quezon City fell on him.

“[The structure] may have been weakened by rains,” said a company official who declined to be identified.

On Monday, the company circulated an internal memo saying that Fernando’s remains lay at the Christ the King Church in Green Meadows subdivision, Quezon City.

“Dave, as he was fondly called, served as chief technology officer and head of fixed network of Smart,” the memo read.

“He was instrumental in developing the technology roadmap and initial roll-out of cellular, fixed and backbone networks of the company.”

The memo described Fernando as “a maverick in the telecoms pre-liberalization era, who envisioned the state of the art and creative solutions for the telecoms industry.”

“He was an active member of the Philippine Electronics and Telecommunications Federation for 20 years, and accorded the Outstanding ECE Award,” the company said.

Kumakain na naman ako ng pizza bread from Bread Talk. Yummy talaga! *sigh* Kaya ako tumataba eh. T.T Gusto kong maibalik yung katawan ko tulad nung 3rd year. O kaya nung 4th year. Taba ko na eh. T.T [Pero kahit pano, nabawasan na taba ko. Araw-araw ba naman kasing maglakad. XD]

Yay! Excited na ko sa Kas1 field trip. Sa Banahaw kami. Na-eexcite ako dahil feeling ko UBE to ng G-10. Sa September 6 na. Yay! [May replay din pala ng 2009 Teen Choice Awards sa Studio 23, 8pm. Hahaha.]

++Right now, I'm looking forward to the 30th Manila International Book Fair. [Exhibit Halls 1-4, SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, September 16-20, 2009 • 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM] Punta rin kayo. May mga books din na naka-sale dun. =))

NEW ADDICTION: Coffee Ice Blended [Vanilla] from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

Bonsoir!

Grabe tong araw na to. Nakakabangag [nakakasabaw ng utak] at nakakapagod pero HAPPY. Haha.

So, wala kasing pasok ngayon dahil QC day. [dati wala akong paki dito kasi di naman ako taga-QC eh. woo! XD] Pero napadpad pa rin ako sa QC dahil: (1) sa ES1 [You can't spell STRESS without ES. Hahahahaha! =))] (2) sa aking Tita.

So [uli], 9am pa lang nasa UP-Ayalaland TechnoHub na ako dahil doon ako magpapaturo ng ES1. Alam ko namang MEDYO male-late yung magtuturo sakin PERO magkaiba kasi ang definition namin ng late. Sa akin, max ng 30mins. Sa kanya, min ng 1hr 30mins. [sa akin über late na yun.] Tapos ayun. 1hr akong nakaupo sa Mini Stop dahil 10am siya nakarating dun. [X( tsktsk.]

So [again], ayun. Sa Coffee Bean kami pumunta [dapat sa KFC pero dun na lang daw sa Coffee Bean para "maganda" yung, ehem, "atmosphere". Haha! =)) Pagdating dun [nung nakaupo na ko], umorder siya. Akala ko naman para sa kanya yun dahil kakain siya. Pero nung tinawag na yung name niya para kunin yung order, 2 Ice Blended coffee [vanilla and caramel] yung binili niya. Nalibre ako bigla. COOL. XD [buti pala vanilla yung pinili ko dahil mas mahal yung caramel. nakakahiya naman kung yung as mahal pa yung napunta sakin no.]

So [na naman], tinuruan nga niya ko. Pero ang nakakatuwa, medyo napaisip siya sa 1st window ng Plate 24. Mahirap na eh. Hahaha! =)) Inabot kami ng mga 1:30pm [not sure] dun. After, sinamahan na niya ako sa Philcoa dahil pupunta na akong Trinoma. Hahaha.

So [errr..], ayun. Nakarating agad akong Trinoma. Dumeretso na kong National Book Store kasi doon na kami magkikita ng Tita ko. [elementary classmate ni Mama. COOL.] Nakakainis dahil ang dami kong gustong bilhing libro. As in MADAMI talaga. [kitang-kita namab sa wishlist ko eh. hahaha! =))] Buti mga past 2 nagkita na kami. Nakakadepress kasi di ko naman mabili lahat ng books. [huhu. T.T] Pumunta na kaming McDo dahil di pa ko naglulunch nun. Nalibre na naman ako. =))

After kong kumain, window shopping na ko! Hahaha! Nakakaenjoy talagang tumingin ng mga damit. Masyadong madaming pwedeng pagpilian. Saya. Haha. =)) Medyo madami rin kaming napuntahang mga boutique kaya di namalayan ang oras. Tama lang kasi dumating ng rin yung ibang Tita/Ninang ko. Then pumunta na kami sa Goldhill Tower [sa Santolan] kasi dun nag-stay yung Tita ko. Dun na rin kami nagkita nila Mama. Hahaha. =)) Tapos ayun. Kumain ng food from Max's tapos mga past 9pm na ata umalis dun.

So [for the nth time], kung anu-ano na naman sinabi ko dito. Parang ewan lang. Sinipag mag-type. Anyhow, ingat kayo.

☺Ang Adventure ni Kim at Chippy [Part 1] - July 17, 2009
Eto kasi yung day na nasuspend yung classes dahil sa bagyo. Eh, nakarating na kami ng UP dun. Ang malas talaga. x.x So syempre, napilitan kamin umuwi agad. Ang masaklap, SUUUUUUUUPER daming tao sa Southbound na MRT. So ayun, hinintay namin yung train. May naunang train na dumaan kaso nilagpasan yung Q. Ave. kaya super naipon yung tao. So syempre, naghintay pa kami. Tapos nung dumating na sa wakas yung train, nasabuyan kami ng tubig galing sa tuktok nung train dahil sa sobrang bilis nung andar. Kairita. Tapos nug bumukas na yung pinto, nagtulakan na yung mga tao. At super naipit ako. Sinisiksik nila ako as if walang tao sa kinatatayuan ko. Pilit nila akong pinipipi. Kakatulak nila sakin, nakapasok ako sa loob. Parang vortex. Kaso muntik naman akong sumubsob dun sa kabilang pinto. Astig. X( So ayun. Para kaming sardinas sa loob. Di mo na kelangang humawak sa straps/bars kasi di ka naman matutumba eh. Nakakairita lang talaga yung isang babae dun. Di ko naman sinadyang maapakan siya no. At siguro naman, sa tagal niyang sumasakay sa MRT na ganun ang situation, wala na siyang karapatang magreklamo. Kami pwede pa kasi 1st time naming na-experience yun. Ayun. Tinarayan ko tuloy. *evil laugh* >=) Pero buti na lang talaga, nakauwi kami ng bahay. Basang-basa nga lang.

☺Ang Adventure ni Kim at Chippy [Part 2] - August 7, 2009
So, kanina lang nangyari to. Galing kasi kaming Katag dahil kumain kami ng early lunch doon. After nun, pumunta kaming Vinzon's Hall. Pagdating naman namin dun, hindi namin nagawa yung dapat namin gawin. Haha! =)) So, nagstart na kasi humangin ng malakas nun. Tapos umaambon. Okay na sana yun eh. At super saklap kasi nung naglalakad na kami, biglang bumuhos yung ulan kaya super nabasa kami. Ayun, tumakbo kami papuntang Educ para sumilong sandali. Tapos, biglang humina yung ulan. Nang-iinis eh. X(

Ayan. 2 beses na kaming nagka-adventure ni Ate Kim. Pareho pang umulan nun. Hahaha! =)) So naisipan ko lang i-blog to. Hmmm. Next time uli. Ciao!

Mostly, this day has been a rainy one. *sigh* I got wet! X( That's why there are times that I hate it when it rains. But still, most of the time, I love it when it rains. Confusing, eh? =))

Yay! I found the Ten Conyomandments!! Ta-daah!

Ten Conyomandments

Conyo here, conyo there, conyo everywhere! Here at La Salle, conyospeak has become an unofficial language as a good chunk of the student body knows, or maybe even mastered the socialite tongue. However, one must never forget the basics of the conyo and we thusly bring you: The Ten Conyomandments.

1. Thou shall make gamit "make+pandiwa".
ex. "Let's make pasok na to our class!"
"Wait lang! I'm making kain pa!"
"Come on na, we can't make hintay anymore! It's in Andrew pa, you know?"

2. Thou shall make kalat "noh", "diba" and "eh" in your pangungusap.
ex. "I don't like to make lakad in the baha nga, no? Eh diba it's like, so eew, diba?"
"What ba: stop nga being maarte noh?"
"Eh as if you want naman also, diba?"

3. When making describe a whatever, always say "It's SO pang-uri!"
ex. "It's so malaki, you know, and so mainit!"
"I know right? So sarap nga, eh!"
"You're making me inggit naman.. I'll make bili nga my own burger."

4. When you are lalaki, make parang punctuation "dude", 'tsong" or "pare"
ex. "Dude, ENGANAL is so hirap, pare."
"I know, tsong, I got bagsak nga in quiz one, eh"

5. Thou shall know you know? I know right!
ex. "My bag is so bigat today, you know"
"I know, right! We have to make dala pa kasi the jumbo Physics book eh!"

6. Make gawa the plural of pangngalans like in English or Spanish.
ex. "I have so many tigyawats, oh!"

7. Like, when you can make kaya, always use like. Like, I know right?
ex. "Like, it's so init naman!"
"Yah! The aircon, it's, like sira!"

8. Make yourself feel so galing by translating the last word of your sentence, you know, your pangungusap?
ex. "Kakainis naman in the LRT! How plenty tao, you know, people?"
"It's so tight nga there, eh, you know, masikip?"

9. Make gamit of plenty abbreviations, you know, daglat?"
ex. "Like, OMG! It's like traffic sa LRT"
"I know right? It's so kaka!"
"Kaka?"
"Kakaasar!"

10. Make gamit the pinakamaarte voice and pronunciation you have para full effect!
ex. "I'm, like, making aral at the Arrhneo!"
"Me naman, I'm from Lazzahl!"

Anyhow.

So, I took this quiz [I think last week or the week before that. Whatever.], and I like the results. I kind of think that most, if not all, of the results are true for me. =)

This has been a fine day. =) Comm 3 at Math 17 lang ang class ko. Walang PE 2 [walking] at Bio 1. Hahahaha! XD So ayun. UBE sa TriNoma with blockmates [G-10]. Super saya! Nagpunta kaming Timezone at, malamang, naglaro. Go Go Balls at Fun Cars at Dance Revo at marami pang iba. Hahaha! =)) Nasa office pala ngayon, at nandito rin yung pamangkin ko. Ang kulit talaga. Ang cute pa. =))

So, anyway, napag-tripan kong gawin yung nasa baba. At share ng konting love stuff na über gusto ko. Enjoy na lang kayo sa pagbabasa. =)

So, galing yan sa special issue ng Kule na puro patama kay Gloria. Nakakatamad lang talagang i-type nung buong article kasi ang haba. Pero nag-enjoy akong basahin to. Pati yung Grim Anatomy. XD Ang galing talaga! =D

Anyhow.

Ayun. Kahapon, as usual [at malamang], pumasok akong UPD. Normal na araw lang. Pero nag-eexpect na ma-cut yung classes ng 1pm. XD So nung Kas1, ayun, kami lang ata yung nagklase sa 4th floor ng AS. Kairita. Kung di raw kasi kami magkaklase, magkakaroon daw ng make-up class. Sheesh. Pero maaga naman kaming dinismiss. [Buti naman.] Tapos after Kas1, kasama ko yung 4NM hanggang 2:30. Nakakabangag/nakakaloko/nakakasira ng ulo yung apat na yun! Hahaha! Tapos sa lagoon pa yung tambayan nila. Ang abnormal talaga. XD Tapos, super late na kong nakauwi kagabi dahil nagpaturo pa ako ng ES1. Naintindihan ko naman. Di naman pala mahirap eh. Kaso may katangahan ako kaya di agad natapos. Tapos yun. So nagpasaway ako at nagpahatid sa nagturo sakin. So ayun, siya yung sobrang ginabi ng uwi. Cool! Hahaha! XD [Peace tayo J!] Tapos ayun. Nakakapagod pero masaya.

after 7 months...

**Apology can NEVER bring back the tears that had fallen. It can't even let you FORGET the pain that you've felt. But it surely REFRESHES a wounded pride and relationship.

I'm not really sure why, all of a sudden, I wanted to start blogging AGAIN. Sheesh. I'm crazy! :))

Anyway, uhh, so far this day is one of the stupidest during my stay at UPD. And it's all because of the first long exam in Bio1. The day started so good because of our Comm3 presentation. [Our grade is 1.0! :)] Just because of one exam, well, you get the point. :))

Oh, yeah! I didn't attend my PE class because I, uhh, STUDIED for the exam. :)) 'Twas my first time to cut classes! XD

Hmm. Tomorrow, I'll be doing Plates 14-16 [ES1] at school because I don't know how to and what to do. Someone will be teaching me. :)) (Hey, thanks!) [Hmm. I hope na it's true that classes would be cut at 1pm so that there would be plenty of time for ES1. :)) I need to do this kasi someone said na if I get 70% or higher sa ES1 second long, he'll treat me! Yey! Food, food, food! I love food! XD
